Compressional wave velocities 4.72 km/s and 5.89 km/s; and shear wave velocities 2.90 and 3.39 km/s are obtained for the upper crustal and the lower crustal layers, respectively. These estimations are made in the vicinity of the Main Central Thrust where it crosses the Yamuna, Bhagirathi and Bhilangana valleys in the Garhwal Himalaya. The data consist of arrival times of compressional and shear waves recorded at five to seven portable stations from 176 earthquakes occurring in the region during 1979-86.
