Lithostratigraphy and structure of the Siwalik succession and its relationship with the Murree succession around Ramnagar area, Udhampur District, J& K
S.S. GUPTA Geological Survey of India, 25 C/C Gandhinagar, Jammu 180 001, India
Based on gross lithology, the Siwalki group of Ramnagar area is divisible into four formations, viz., Mansar Dewal, Mohargarh and Uttarbaini. The Mansar and Uttarbaini formations are further divisible into Dodenal and Ramnagar members, and Labli and Marikhui members respectively. The Mansar Formation is richly fossiliferous and its Ramnagar Member is correlatable with the Chinji Faunal Zone of the type area (Pakistan) and Banhandi Fauna of Himachal Pradesh. The contact between the Murree Group and the overlying Siwalik Group is gradational in the southern part of the Ramnagar area, whereas in the northern part it is tectonic.
Regionally, the Siwalik succession is folded into a doubly plunging syncline with its northern limb refolded into a cross fold due northwest of Udhampur. Tanhal and Mandili-Kishanpur thrusts are the main tectonic features in the area.
